Newsletter for November 17, 2014

Greetings everyone!

We are looking forward to seeing you tonight as we welcome Jesse Graston, the local field coordinator of The John Birch Society.  The focus of the evening will be a discussion on the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), a proposed regional free-trade agreement. As of 2014, twelve countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region have participated in negotiations on the TPP: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam.

The proposed agreement began in 2005 as the Trans-Pacific Strategic Partnership Agreement (TPSEP or P4). Participating countries set the goal of wrapping up negotiations in 2012, but contentious issues such as agriculture, intellectual property, and services and investments have caused negotiations to continue into the present.  Implementation of the TPP is one of the primary goals of the trade agenda of the Obama administration in the United States of America.

There are legitimate debates over so called “free trade” agreements in general, but does the TPP represent more than what it appears to on the surface?  Join us and find out!

As always, our social hour begins at 5pm and our meeting will run from 6:00-7:30pm at the Dilworth Neighborhood Grille.  See you soon!

Sales Tax Referendum

As previously mentioned, we are excited to have played a role in the defeat of the proposed Mecklenburg Sales Tax hike.  Our signs gave visibility to an opposition movement and we were able to educate people on the issue. Unfortunately, this did come with a price tag.  While we have been able to raise some money to refill our organization’s coffers, we aren’t quite there yet.  Our regular membership voluntarily contributes $1 per meeting they attend.  If you aren’t a regular attendee, but support our cause, we would like to encourage you to make a donation of any amount to the club.  Your resources will help us continue to have an impact on local policy decisions.  You can donate via PayPal or credit card at THIS LINK.  This is the account of our club President.  Just leave a message as you make the donation that it is for CAUTION and it will get to the right place.  Thanks in advance!!

Toll Madness

As if the entirety of the planned HOT lanes on I-77 weren’t already bad enough, it looks like the design firm mentioned in the HOT lane contract, the Louis Berger Group, holds the record for the largest fraud penalty ever to be paid out by a war-zone contractor.  You just can’t make this stuff up!!  Read more HERE.

Also, the encroachment of HOT lanes now makes its way into Charlotte proper.  Independence Blvd to be exact. Check out this story in the Observer.
